At Lambeth Palace Library we also hold part of the collection that belongs to Sion College. From the 1620s onwards, Sion College's library received donations from a broad swathe of London's citizens, some of whom we can identify and many others that we cannot. In 1720, eighteen books belonging to a Doctor Kellerman were donated to the library. So far we have identified nine. Read our blog to find out more about the books and their former owner! Today is #NationalDoctorsDay and while we're very glad at LPL we live in a world with modern medicine and NHS doctors (and especially to have a hospital just over the road in case of accidents!), we can't help but be fascinated by Medieval and Early Modern medical texts. Last year, we looked into what medical material our collection holds for History Day and created videos and written explorations. You can find those at the link in bio by clicking on the 'History Day 2022' link! This lovely watercolour shows the old coach house and stables of Lambeth Palace. It was painted by the architect Edward Blore as a series of works he did showing the Palace before and after the rebuilding of a large part of the Palace complex to his designs in the 1830s. This significant remodelling work involved demolishing the buildings shown here. It's the last week to see 'Enslavement: Voices from the Archives'. This map features in the exhibition and shows the 'Coasts, Countries and Islands within ye limits of ye South Sea Company'. This lovely manuscript has recently spent some in our Collections Care studio being evaluated for future conservation work. It's a Quran, apparently complete, in an untrained naskhī hand and has a beautiful Islamic binding that unfortunately hasn't had the easiest life - the edges of the leather have come away so it's possible to see how the boards have been made from layers of paper, while other parts have been nibbled by pests. Although there's no date, it is probably 18th century and from Turkey, Iran, or Iraq. Today is the Feast of the Annunciation of Our Lord to the Blessed Virgin Mary. In this late 13th century illumination, Gabriel on the left has coloured wings and holds inscribed scroll, while the Virgin holds a book, with a dove at her ear. The gold background has a diamond pattern scratched into it. This is the title page of a Latin Bible that is believed to have been owned by Martin Luther. Dating to 1522, it features manuscript notes and marginal annotations throughout which are said to be in the hand of Luther, with with his possible signature partially blocked out on this page. This beautiful woodcut is one end of a panoramic view of Venice from 1486. It folds out from one of our incunables, or early printed books. If you look closely you can not only see the folds (which seem to have changed over the centuries!) but also where it was originally stuck together. Today is the #InternationalDayOfHappiness! For most of us at the Library, happiness is curling up with a good book - but a scroll would do, like for this nimbed man. Nimbed is a term use to describe someone depicted with a nimbus, or halo, around their head. It's #StPatricksDay and here's a lovely image of him expelling the snakes from Ireland. It's taken from Thomas Walsh's 'History of the Irish Hierarchy', published in 1854.
